Who is EFRI ?

We’re a team of researchers passionate about understanding how forests, freshwater systems, and climate interact to shape healthy ecosystems. Our work explores how human activities—from forestry to land use—impact biodiversity and habitat resilience. By combining field studies, data modelling, and community collaboration, we aim to create practical, science-based solutions that support sustainable resource management and thriving environments for both people and wildlife.

How is EFRI funded?

EFRI's initial $1.6M of seed funding (2023) came from the Forestry Innovation Transition Trust administered by Research Nova Scotia, for a six-year program. Since this time, we have expanded the scope of EFRI with additional funding sources and programs (see list of funders below).

Where is EFRI research conducted?

Most of our research is focused on Nova Scotia, Canada. Many of our projects and results have wider applicability to the Wabanaki forest region and forest policy in Canada more broadly.

EFRI consists of 4 clusters, which are overseen by the Core Team.

Dr. Alana Westwood

Core Team Chair & Principal Investigator

Dr. Westwood (she/her/elle) is an Associate professor at the School for Resource and Environmental Studies at Dalhousie University and brings together ecology and policy to pursue effective solutions to natural resource management challenges. She studies the impacts of forestry and cumulative effects on terrestrial ecosystems and their species, as well as how knowledge moves across the science-policy interface. Taken together, her work supplies the evidence and boundary-spanning tools for sustainable natural resource management.

Dr. Anthony Taylor

FBMC Co-chair

Dr. Taylor is an Associate Professor of Forest Management at the University of New Brunswick and a Registered Professional Forester. His research focuses on the effects of management strategies on conservation, forest carbon, adaptation to climate change, and resource economics.

Dr. Taylor holds a BSc. in Environmental Science from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a MSc. and PhD. in Forestry from Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Dr. Karen Harper

FBMC Co-Chair

Karen Harper is an adjunct professor and instructor at Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University. Karen’s research focuses on vegetation patterns across forest edges at sites across Nova Scotia. She is interested in spatial and temporal patterns of plant communities. Some of her recent projects include investigations of structural diversity, spatial patterns across heterogeneous landscapes and comparisons of vegetation at different types of forest edges.

Roxanne Van Rooyen

FBMC Co-Chair

Roxanne (she/her) is a MSc student at Saint Mary’s University studying the edge effects of resource roads on vegetation structure, wildlife habitat and connectivity in the Wabanaki (Acadian) forest region. Prior to this MSc opportunity, she worked for a forestry consultant in BC after completing an undergraduate degree in Natural Resource Science at TRU in Kamloops, BC, in 2023. In her spare time, she enjoys playing sports, hiking, camping, horse packing, or anything outdoors!

Dr. Heather Macdonald

KEG Co-Chair

Dr. Heather MacDonald is an Interdisciplinary Social Scientist at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre (GLFC) in Sault Ste Marie and is part of the Canadian Forest Service (Natural Resources Canada). Current research interests include sustainable forest development in Canada and globally, including research on tree planting, bioenergy, wildfire, and forest disease/forest infestations. Her research also includes the development of spatial models of climate variables to provide support for researchers inside and outside the Canadian Forest Service investigating climate and climate change impacts.

Alana Lajoie-O’Malley

Alana Lajoie-O’Malley (she/her) is an interdisciplinary science and technology studies (STS) researcher examining questions of knowledge production and technical decision-making during environmental controversies. At Westwood Lab, she is leading two of the four research clusters included in the SSHRC-funded project What constitutes “effective” knowledge exchange at the environmental science-policy interface? Alana holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Ottawa (2024) and an MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies from the University of Oxford (2009). She also holds both a BA (Hons) and a BSc. from the University of Winnipeg, where she studied physics, political theory, and the history of science. Before returning to university to complete her PhD, she spent a decade as the institutional lead and public face of UWinnipeg’s sustainability efforts and as a supporter/initiator of several community-based environmental initiatives in Manitoba. When not working, Alana is most likely hanging out with her toddler, preferably in the woods.

Revant Sharan

Research Coordinator

Revant Sharan (he/him) is a research coordinator and is responsible for the management and coordination of the Forestry Innovation Transition Trust (FITT) funded grant for the Ecological Forestry Research Initiative (EFRI) as well as managing the Westwood Lab. He is a recent graduate of the Master of Resource and Environmental Management (MREM) program from Dalhousie University and has 10 years of experience managing renewable energy projects. Prior to this, he completed an MBA from the University of Glasgow. He is passionate about the sustainability of the environment and strives to take on the challenges in the field of resource and environmental management head-on. His hobbies include playing team sports and cooking.

Jane Barker

Jane Barker (she/her) has worked in conservation and resource management sector for decades in both Scotland and Canada, with a background in ecology, research, and environmental education. Previous work in Nova Scotia includes private land stewardship and species at risk conservation initiatives with the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute, and co-founding organizations such as the Medway Community Forest Co-op and the Western Woodlot Services Co-op. She currently works as a Project Coordinator for the Nova Scotia Community College’s Centre of Forest Innovation and is a current member of the Minister of Natural Resources Advisory Committee on ecological forestry. She has a BSc in Combined Sciences from the University of Central Lancashire and a Post-graduate Diploma in Protected Landscape Management from Aberystwyth University. When she is not working, Jane loves hiking, biking, paddling, skiing, growing vegetables, or anything that gets her outside!

James Stephens

CVC Co-chair

James is a professional appraiser and agrologist, past president of the Nova Scotia Real Estate Appraisers Association, and owner of Hillside Consulting Ltd. James is a MSc. Forestry candidate at the University of New Brunswick Forest Management Laboratory, evaluating woodland carbon accreditation programs for use by landowners and professional appraisers in the Wabanaki/Acadian Forest. He has a BSc. In Environmental Science from the University of Guelph, an advanced diploma in GIS from the Nova Scotia Community College’s Centre for Geographic Sciences, and a diploma in Urban Land Economics from the University of British Columbia.

Ben Collison

FBMC Co-chair

Ben Collison (he/him) is PhD Candidate investigating the effects of industrial-scale forestry on endangered Atlantic salmon watersheds. He holds a Master of Resource & Environmental Management (MREM) degree from Dalhousie University (2021) and a BSc in Environmental Science from the University of Lethbridge (2020). Ben’s fields of study range from ecology to policy, and he is keenly interested in topics such as cumulative effects, riparian-freshwater dynamics, and environmental impact assessment. When he’s not studying watersheds, you can typically find Ben playing golf or out in the wilderness hiking, camping, kayaking and skiing.
